Brewer’s Blog 4-23-10

Sorry to be so tardy with our blog, I guess we have been focusing on brewing too much? Well, we have been up to a lot since our last blog at PHB and we will be very busy with new brews and special events throughout the spring and summer. We are also approaching our 1000th batch of PHB house brewed beer this May. This will most likely be an Igniter Pale Ale inspired Barley Wine but we are still open for ideas. Your suggestions are welcomed for this commemorative brew and feel free to post your 1000th brew comments on our Facebook page; we will make the final call on May 11th, 2010.

Starting with new brews currently we have Springtime Saison and Arson Amber #2 on tap with Hindenburg Light to follow this spring. Springtime Saison is a sunset orange colored Belgian-style ale that uses 4 different yeast strains, chamomile and lavender to produce at cosmic flavored brew that has notes of peaches, lemon peel and bubblegum in the flavor and aroma. A beautiful brew to say the least, this beer is our liquid masterpiece. Arson Amber #2 is different than the first with lower alcohol, lighter body and a new combination of CTZ and Summit hops. The new hop profile gives this beer a hop forward flavor that is part earthy, part orange with a hint of green onion(summit hops). Green onion flavor in beer does sound weird but I think it adds a little intrigue. If you want to get a real heavy dose of these Summit hops try Oskar Blues’ Gubna Imperial IPA that uses Summit hops exclusively.  Hindenburg Light, Kolsch-style ale, will return in early May to satisfy easy-drinking folks with a lightly hopped, lager-like feel.

We are also brewing Citra Pale Ale this weekend with avid homebrewer, James Whiddon of Boulder. His beer was selected by the brewing staff for a Pro-Am category for this September’s Great American Beer Festival. The Pro-Am category is designed by the Brewer’s Association to link home brewers with professional brewers in a collaborative effort to produce beer for this special event. Basically the home brewer chosen will get to brew his beer with the “pros” on their system. James’ beer was selected at the “Peak to Peak Pro-Am Challenge” held at Left Hand Brewing Company in March. Avery, Oskar Blues and Crabtree Brewing Companies also selected beers from this competition and all will be entered for judging at the “big dance” this September. Wish us luck on this new entry.

As for special events we are going to be participating in the Boulder Farmer’s Market “Beer Booth” on Wednesdays July 7th and August 25th. From 2PM-8PM we will be the featured brewery in the Food Court, a delicious and inexpensive way to enjoy a summer evening. Starting June 24th we will also have a booth at the Longmont Summer Concert Series held a couple blocks south of the brewery. This event has local food and beer with exceptional free music (sorry beer & food is not free) and chance to hang out with your neighbors.  A detailed list of events will be posted on our website next week and in our blog next time.

Cheers,

David Mentus

Head Brewer
